Amazon ECS (Elastic Container Service)

What is Amazon ECS?

Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS) is a fully managed container orchestration service provided by AWS. It enables you to deploy, manage, and scale containerized applications using Docker containers. ECS removes the need to install and operate your own container orchestration software or manage the underlying infrastructure, making it easier to run microservices and distributed systems at scale.

ECS supports multiple launch types, including AWS Fargate for serverless compute and Amazon EC2 for greater control over infrastructure. With ECS, you can easily integrate with other AWS services such as Elastic Load Balancing, IAM, CloudWatch, and more, to build secure and highly available applications. ECS is suitable for a wide range of workloads, from simple web apps to complex, mission-critical microservices architectures.

Key Components

Cluster

A logical grouping of tasks or services. Clusters are where you run and manage your containerized applications, and can use EC2 or Fargate as the underlying compute.

Task Definition

A blueprint that describes how a Docker container should launch, including image, CPU/memory, networking, and environment variables. Each task definition can have multiple container definitions.

Service

A service enables you to run and maintain a specified number of instances of a task definition simultaneously in a cluster, with optional load balancing and auto-scaling.

This example demonstrates how to create an ECS cluster, register a task definition, and run a task using the AWS CLI with Fargate. The task-definition.json file specifies the container details. Networking configuration ensures the task runs in the specified VPC subnet with the appropriate security group.
